SWLP shut out of Victorian budget

The 2025/26 Victorian State Budget was an opportunity for the government to affirm its commitment to sex workers, three years on from the commencement of the Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2022 (Vic).

This globally significant legislation marked a courageous step forward by the Victorian Labor government. However, without adequate investment in implementing and socialising the law, the government risks shortchanging its own intentions.

A well-resourced, free-to-access legal service remains critical to the success of sex work decriminalisation in Victoria. It ensures the legislation is tested, upheld, and made real for those it was designed to protect – sex workers who would otherwise be unable to access justice.

Since 2022, the Sex Worker Legal Program (SWLP) has undertaken more than 900 legal tasks, providing specialist support to sex workers navigating discrimination, unlawful conduct, and unsafe working conditions. The evidence is clear: sex workers are still facing systemic barriers to justice and unsafe work environments. Without access to safe, specialised legal help, many are unable, or understandably unwilling, to pursue justiciable matters.

This undermines not only the effectiveness of the law but also the safety, health, and economic security of sex workers across the state.

We are calling on the community, allies, and advocates to take action. Help us hold the government accountable to its own vision of decriminalisation.
