Farewell Longstanding Board Members
It is with heartfelt thanks that we farewell three longstanding Southside Justice board members – Denis Nelthorpe, Elliot Anderson and Sonia Clarke.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Chair Denis Nelthorpe, former Treasurer Elliot Anderson, and Sonia Clarke, who are stepping down after a combined 17 years of dedicated service. Each has played a pivotal role in steering Southside Justice through periods of significant growth and transformation, including the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, our rebrand and relocation, and the development of a renewed strategic direction. Their legacy ensures Southside Justice is positioned for long-term sustainability and success.
Denis Nelthrope reflects,
“Five years ago, I joined the Board of what was then St Kilda Legal Service, stepping into the role of Chair during a time of major transition. COVID-19 had just disrupted service delivery, and the organisation was shifting from a traditional shopfront model to a partnership-based, integrated approach.
Today, as Southside Justice, we operate from a purpose-built, long-term home thanks to philanthropic support. Our service is professional, welcoming, and deeply embedded in the community through strong partnerships with local agencies. We’re proud to be recognised for our advocacy, especially for sex workers and people experiencing homelessness.
Stability has been key – our Board and staff have remained committed and energised by the new model. But challenges remain. The inner-south still faces funding gaps in areas like tenancy and family violence. We need more resources and community support to meet these needs.
As I step down, I want to thank CEO Mel Dye, our dedicated Board, and our incredible staff. Southside Justice is a champion for the most vulnerable in the community, and with continued support, it can achieve even more.”
Long-term board member and Secretary, Brendan Lacota, will step into the Board Chair role. Brendan’s deep knowledge of Southside Justice and the community legal sector will be invaluable during this transition period, including supporting our newest board members to settle into their roles.
